Meet Miriam
“The tree has to be growing as you paint it. The water on the brush is the rain that feeds it, and your eye is the sunlight that shapes it. It must always be actively living, reaching to the sky.”
So Miriam would say to her watercolor students. From her childhood in WWI-era Boston to her final years in Southern California, painting was the act of directly translating life into vibrant color and shape.
Her art is joyously contradictory; graceful but still, versatile but distinct, playful but profound. While boldly a result of the mid-century Los Angeles art scene she thrived in, Miriam's introspective nuance allows her work to transcend its era.
