Thoughts on this painting -
I remember when I was four years old, before we left Los Angeles for San Diego, I'd visit Miriam with my parents in her West Hollywood home. We'd make popcorn, watch Disney movies, and then she would bring out a tiny china tea set - the cups must have been no bigger than an inch in diameter - and we'd stage a tea party in her living room. It was delightful.
I think the tea party represents a kind of innocence for her. It's a recurring motif in several of her works, including in her sketches, etchings and lithographs. This, however, is the most fully-formed incarnation of the idea we possess. Whenever I think about it, I can't help but remember what a wonderful grandma Miriam was.
